Living medicine: recollections and reflections

Dame Margaret Turner-Warwick

Dame Margaret Turner-Warwick was the first woman to hold the post of president of the Royal College of Physicians in 472 years. This reflection on her life covers the early days growing up in London and Exeter; qualifying in 1950 shortly after the formation of the NHS, to being elected president then chair of the Royal Devon and Exeter Healthcare Trust Hospital.

Living medicine is a testimony of an individual who has dedicated her life to the care of patients. It provides a compelling read for anyone working in the health service or medical research and education as it offers a sense of optimism about the future, but at the same time draws attention to pitfalls from which we can all learn.
